The Rest of Vacation

I was so wrapped up in having fun, I didn’t blog the rest of our vacation. Here are the highlights: Two days in Chicago. Six days in Milwaukee. Three days in Green Bay. You heard about Chicago already. So Milwaukee. We love Milwaukee. It has so much to offer. It’s grown so much in the past 10 years. And every time we visit, we say we’re going to do XYZ, then never do it because we are busy doing something else. This was kind of a “stay-cation” for us. It was great. State Fair Paddle Boats on the Lagoon Visited with all our family Hosted Packer Party Dined out at…

GF Gluten Free at WI State Fair

Just a quick post to let you know there are GF menus available at State Fair. You can get them at the information booths with a map of the fair grounds. I post this because many times things that are GF are also nut free, and we used the GF map as a guide as to where to go with food requests. If you’re a nursing mamma, there are very nice and clean nursing stations set up near the entrance of Spin City, the games + rides area.

Wisconsin State Fair

Yesterday we tackled the fair. It was a last minute choice after dance camp. If you’re planning on going to the fair, pack the following in your backpack for allergy kids: Extra clothes  Container of wipes, sanitizing hand wipes Bottled water Complete backup allergy meal / protein bars – I like Luna bars, the s’mores and lemon flavor are the two safe ones. Sunscreen Epi pens Chewable benadryl We started off by getting a few ears of corn near the entry way. The very nice woman confirmed they used soybean oil plus plain butter on their corn. The various salt options were on a table for me to check th…

Family Vacation – Day 2 Chicago

Chicago has been very allergy friendly. They have to be. With how populated the city is, and the crazy number of tourists on a daily basis, it’s a must.  This morning we woke up (after a restless night of sleep, had to put my R.A. skills to go use, again. Noisy Lollapalooza neighbor!) And decided to head over to Grand Luxe Cafe.  The decor at Grand Luxe was fun to look at. Very opulent and whimsical. We were seated in the round room, floor to celing windows with a giant floral Chandler in the middle. Huge murals above. It was quite striking and made for great conversation with the kids.…

Family Vacation Day 1 – Chicago

It’s our annual summer vacation and since we haven’t had the greatest luck traveling with the kids (influenza x2 at Disney, among others) we decided to follow the good old KISS principle.  Keep. It. Simple. Stupid. We are keeping simple this time. We aren’t far from home and if we need anything, we can buy it. Our trip consists of a few days in Chicago, a week in Milwaukee and a long weekend in Green Bay to visit those Packers! This vacation has no plan.  I’m a planner. This is challenging me in new ways. We literally are making plans on the fly. In many ways this is amazing. We…

Vacation Preparation Tips

Did you know that using hand sanitizer does NOT remove allergens from your hands or any other surface? It basically moves the allergen around. The only way to remove an allergen is by washing it away with soap and water or by using a sanitizing wipe. I’ve started to think about what we’re going to be doing on our vacation and the types of bags I’ll be carrying around with my kids. For day-time I’m going to be doing a lot of walking with them, so I usually pick a light-weight cross body bag so that my hands are free to hold theirs (awwwwwwwe). If we’re going to be out…

Movies in the 608

One of my favorite things to do is go to the movies. It’s special to see a new movie on a huge screen, eat some popcorn and be “out” with friends and family.  One of the challenges we face is cross contact of food at the movie theater. This is the entire reason we can’t see a Milwaukee Brewer Game. Peanuts everywhere. Although a brewer game is significantly more risky for us to attend than a movie since AMC doesn’t serve giant bags of nuts. After a few conversations at the AMC Fitchburg and the AMC Dine-In, I have learned a lot. AMC Fichburg ( recently under new ownership, NewVision…

Disney Reflection

It’s easy to just assume this was the worst vacation ever and that we will never spend this much money at Disney again. Yes, the latter is true. But, there were some huge moments during this vacation that I will never forget. We were all a team and never wavered, never fought, never cried. We were adults about every shitty situation that came our way and we dealt with it. How you deal with things sets the standard for children and how they will someday deal with life events on their own. It’s life. Stuff happens. My kids showed exceptional kindness and caring toward each other while they were BOTH…

Disney Vacation Day 9

Woah – Day 9?! Here we are, Hilton Homewood suites ROCKS! They have free appetizers and drinks at night and a huge complimentary (nut free) breakfast too. Makes it easy, we dont have to leave for meals, BUT, we’re on International Drive that has a TON of cool places to eat!!! There are about 20 restaurants in a 6 block radius. Today we woke up, had breakfast and Doug, Carter and I went for a walk while my Mom and Chloe rested up. We walked to a common area with a huge aquarium, play space, Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, Crepe Restaurant and huge ferris wheel. Carter had a ball…

Disney Vacation Day 8

Yahoo! Today is supposed to be the day we fly home, instead we are going to pool-it and lay out and watch the kids splash around in the Mickey Mouse Splash Pad, use the water slides, rent a boat, play in the sand, drink fluffy pool drinks, you know?! Wait….Chloe just woke up with fever? A fever. Chloe woke up with a fever. Ok, well now what? She’s crying and says she feels sick and doesn’t want to do anything. Two days ago, we booked an extra night at Bay Lake Tower and rescheduled our flights for Friday morning. So, we have this extra day……do we spend all this money…

Disney Vacation Day 7

Today is Wednesday, and it’s our Magic Kingdom Day! Last night we took the shuttle to Disney Springs. Wow – it was amazing. I never expected to listen to so much live music, see so many great sights, get the kids on more rides?! We had dinner at House of Blues where the staff was AMAZING about food allergies and cross contact. The chef came out and talked to us, even brought out labels and double checked on the manufacturing facility of the corn bread. SO SO SO thankful for caring peeps like the ones at House of Blues. This place was very eclectic. The music was amazing, the decor…

Disney Vacation Day 6

Quick post here – we had quick service lunch today and discovered these amazing Top 8 Allergy Free Falafel Chips inside our snack boxes with carrots and cucumber! So delicious too!!!! With a day spent at urgent care, we are off to Disney Springs shortly. Everyone is PERKING up big time!!! And we pushed our Vacation out a day. Definitely did not want to be at the airport the day Trump fly’s in.

Disney Vacation Day 5

When your day starts off with a pina colada, it’s going to be good. It’s has to be. We decided to cancel our reservation today at 1900 Fair at the Grand Floridian due to little man’s virus. He’s improving, but still up a lot at night complaining of “runny nose mamma, runny nose” so he’s not getting the best sleep – and neither are we. Since Carter looked OK this morning, we went for a walk down the New Balance Running trails over to the sandy (but very fenced in) beach area. The kids took their shoes off and played around in the soft white sand, which was warm. We…

Disney Vacation Day 4

Today is Epcot Day. And Ladies day. Poor Carter man still had a high fever and was pretty uncomfortable, so Doug stayed back with him at the resort. We started the day off with a buffet at Cape May Cafe. This is our third time having a character breakfast here and we love it. It’s low key, casual and you get to see Minnie, Goofy, Donald and Daisy. Mickey comes for dinner. Chloe was so excited to see all of her favorite characters – and it was fun to have a girls morning. We had some Mickey Mouse waffles, fruit and yogurt. The chef also came out to talk with…
