Nutphrees Cupcakes

We had an awesome 4th of July – and I really hope you did, too. We had a big discovery while on vacation; NUTPHREES CUPCAKES are now being distributed to the lovely state of Wisconsin. This is a huge. A real game changer. Safe nut-free baked items will now be available for pick up at your local grocery store for birthdays + parties. I’m so thankful for this brand, Nutphrees, from the Chicagoland area. I’ve talked about them before on nutfreemomblog and this is my other favorite feature of this evolving company, delivery. In Madison, WI, they are at Whole Foods. In the Milwaukee area, they are at a few…

Dairy Queen & Nut Allergies

It is summer, and a steamy one at that. We’re all frantically reading labels and trying to find cool summertime treats for our kiddos and friends. It is certainly tricky when you have a food allergy, to say the least. Over the past year we have become good friends with our neighborhood Dairy Queen. Each Dairy Queen is a little different, and establishing a relationship is crucial when you have an allergy. The DQ that we frequent has a few “approved” by MOM items on its menu. The soft serve and pre-packed Starkiss popsicles are some of them. How do we DQ? Know your DQ or talk to a manager…

Lite Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp

I fully intended on blogging tonight about my failed recipe disaster, minus an oven fire. You see, any creation that comes out of a kitchen with two wild animals roaming freely is bound to end in disaster, eventually, if not regularly. I regularly mess things up in the kitchen when I’m cooking / baking, mostly because I’m half responding to the random MOM, MOM, MOM, MOM questions buzzing in my ear. The point is not to dwell on it, then just eat it or throw it out and move on…to McDonalds. Fortunately, luck was on our side tonight. We were multitasking ninjas and decided it was a splendid time to…

Allergy Friendly Ice Cream

Its summer! And I’ve had a lot of traffic on the  blog regarding ice cream. In November, I met the very amazing and talented SPOKIN. Check them out as well as this link for safe ice cream. https://www.spokin.com/dairy-free-food-allergy-friendly-ice-cream/

National Donut Day & Nut Allergies

It’s tricky to take part in some of these made up holidays our nation throws at us. Today is national donut day, I had no idea until I saw the news today. So, to help my nut allergic kiddo feel part of the crowd, we use Entenmanns Cake Donuts as our go-to safe donut. I also have a piece about how we do Dunkin Donuts. And like all other food related items, check the labels first. Enjoy your day full of donuts!

Banana Oatmeal Cookies

It was 90 in Wisconsin today and we have gone from winter to summer in a very short time period. And to top it off, both kids are sick. So when we are stuck inside, I bake. The kids had some energy today, but we did watch 3 movies. Emoji movie isn’t half bad the 3rd time around. At least we didn’t have to watch My Little Pony. Today we had a ton of bananas approaching “extreme ripeness” so this recipe came in handy for the long holiday weekend. It’s very easy and most of it you already have in your pantry. It’s the perfect addition to any cookout this…

Top 5 Summer Snacks

Can you believe it? Summer! YES! It’s right around the corner. Well, if you live in Wisconsin, you really do not believe it yet – we literally had winter coats out last week when it dipped back down into the low 40s. Seriously. However, SUMMER MUST come eventually and school lets out in just under 3 weeks. The excitement is palpable. I thought I’d share some of our favorite summer staples, along with links for the giant containers we use for sharing our snacks. Because I know one thing about summer + kids = WE EAT A LOT OF FOOD!  Balled Watermelon Sprinkled with Sea Salt: check out my piece on…

Campbells Soup at Hand

The options of Soup at Hand made by Campbells Soup Company are plentiful. When it’s a busy day and we still want a healthy meal at home, we reach for Soup at Hand since it’s only 1 minute in the microwave, sip and go! It fits perfectly in our cupholders in the car, too. Saltine crackers are always nutfree, they are made by Nabisco. Organic Girl spinach is triple washed and ready to eat and blueberries were on sale 2/$4 at Metcalfes Market. My favorite salad dressing, Newmans Own Balsamic is also nutfree, but be sure to check your labels. They also make a pecan balsamic and I’ve almost purchased…

Watermelon & Himalayan Pink Sea Salt

A friend of mine, @healthy.madeinmadison, posted this picture on Instagram about watermelon sprinkled with pink himalayan sea salt. I’ve heard about adding salt to watermelon, but I never actually knew why. Until today. And it has a lot to do with modernization of farming. If you want to learn more, click here. Basically, ADD SALT TO YOUR WATERMELON. Not nasty, bleached white salt, GOOD SALT. Like Himalayan pink sea salt, or just sea salt. Natural stuff. It really does wonders for the flavor (Thanks, Chemistry!) and aids with digestion. We took 1/2 watermelon and balled it, then sliced a lime, zested some of it over the watermelon, and sprinkled with…

Meal Inspo 4/16/18

Looking for some quick meal inspiration? We’ve had a ton of extra activities at school, and outside of school, that has required us to think super ninja fast for meal times. Actually, now that I think of it, making meals at home is REALLY hard. It requires some serious dedication to plan, purchase, cook, serve, and clean up! Our grocery bill this week was only $98 since we’re trying really hard to eat leftovers, only buy what we eat, and make the most out of what we have. Week after week, I throw away so much away because we just do not eat them or have the time to make…

Dunkin' Donuts & Nut Allergies Part III

Are Dunkin’ Donuts safe for people with peanut and tree nut allergies? Well, we went again, and we have PN and TN allergies and we were totally OK. I did do a little more research though and I wanted to share that here:  Dunkin Donuts only bakes SOME of their donuts in-house. The rest are shipped in from central bakeries. They started doing this in the 90’s to save money. Not all Dunkin Donuts are nut free, like the location I have been going to. For some reason, the past few months that we have gone, there are NO NUTS in this store. And they understand nut allergies 100% at…

Starbucks and Nut Allergies

Starbucks is a common stop for us.  Grownups love it, kids love it and what is a better way to deal with YET MORE SNOW IN WISCONSIN than a nice warm cup of coffee or tea?! Literally, I have no words for April snow. I mean, COME ON! When we were first diagnosed with nut allergies, we avoided Starbucks completely. However, that’s no way to live life {coffee deprived, are you KIDDING me?! Also known as Mean Mommy!}. Once we figured out how to navigate the Starbucks menu a bit, we learned that our favorite treat was no longer completely off limits. If you follow me in Instagram @nutfreemomblog, you’ve…
